Lab901 Ltd. today announced that it has signed a distribution deal with the Korean PCR diagnostics firm Seegene Inc. Under the deal, Lab901 has appointed Seegene as its exclusive diagnostics distributor for the ScreenTape® system in the Korean market. The parties will also co-market their ScreenTape® and Seeplex® products in the global multiplex PCR diagnostics market.   more »

Pathology laboratories planning to implement fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) for analysis of HER2 gene amplification in either the confirmatory setting as reflexed from immunohistochemistry or for primary testing of breast carcinomas, may encounter obstacles such as the requirement for specialized instrumentation for staining, supplemental training requirements for pathologists and technologists, delays attributable to overnight hybridization, and complex manual protocols. Silver in situ hybridization (SISH) as an alternative to FISH has been developed by Ventana Medical Systems.   more »

View Article  What is a "Human Admixed Embryo"? - an article by Julian Hitchcock
In the language of developmental biology, an “embryo” arises with the appearance, on the surface of the growing ball of cells created following conception, of a feature known as the “primitive streak”. In effect, this is the point at which the cells display the characteristics of a vertebrate. In humans, this happens at about 14 days following fertilisation. Before then, the developing ball of cells is known as a “blastocyst”. The Human Fertilisation & Embryology Act 1990 (the “Act”) made the word “embryo” include the blastocyst.   more »

View Article  Biocontrol Ltd presents data from first superbug clinical trial at Bacteriophage meeting
The use of natural controls against serious bacterial infection and superbugs is being led by a UK company. Scientists at Biocontrol Ltd gave the audience at EuroSciCon's Bacteriophage: Nature and Exploitation meeting in Hertfordshire a first look at the results of their initial Phase II clinical trial. This is the first fully-regulated clinical trial to test whether phage therapy really works and it shows positive results for Biocontrol’s innovative treatments, which attack and destroy previously untreatable bacterial infections.   more »
