Nosocomial infections or hospital/healthcare acquired infections are often acquired as a result of treatment in hospital or a healthcare unit. The most common and publically aware nosocomial infection is MRSA, which often makes an appearance on headline news. HCAI have a huge impact and concern to the healthcare service and patients. The emergence of multi-drug resistant infections presents an increasing global threat for successful treatment of patients and prevention of cross infections in the hospital environment and other healthcare establishments as well as in the community. The main cause of the problem has been linked to the inappropriate usage and over subscribing of antibiotics which has led to the need for increased education of both the public and professionals on the correct use of antibiotics as well as stringent infection control measures to reduce the transmission of infections. The Department of Health has set out a strategy called “Towards cleaner hospitals and lower rates of infection programme”. This programme “sets out a strategy to improve hospital cleanliness and tackle healthcare associated infections. Key elements include empowering patients and the public, the matron's charter, independent inspection and learning from the best. In this forum infection prevention, control and research into this within hospitals will be discussed.”. Meeting Chair: Dr Rajinder Pnaiser, UK
